ABSTRACT:
Heritage building conservation in Maiduguri, Borno State, faces ongoing deterioration driven by environmental stressors and neglect. This study assesses the condition of selected heritage buildings in Maiduguri, Borno State, identifies their conservation challenges and explores the applicability of modern technological interventions. The study also conducts a detailed condition assessment of two key structures—the Shehu of Borno Palace and Dandal Police Quarters—through physical surveys and stakeholder interviews, aiming to document deterioration patterns and identify conservation challenges. The findings present a comprehensive condition grading based on an explicitly defined scale, revealing varying degrees of deterioration linked to specific mechanisms such as moisture ingress, material fatigue, and previous interventions. While the study discusses the potential of innovative techniques like non-destructive testing and digital documentation, it does not evaluate their efficacy directly. The research highlights the need for integrating detailed condition data with targeted conservation strategies, emphasizing capacity building and policy support to ensure sustainable preservation of Maiduguri’s architectural heritage.
